Graston Technique

 What is Graston?

GTonBackweb.jpg

The Graston Technique is a form of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization that uses six specifically designed stainless steel tools to detect and treat muscles, tendons and ligaments that demonstrate decreased function due to injury or chronic overuse.

What are the benefits of the Graston Technique?

Research demonstrates that nearly 87% of all patients achieve their treatment goals with Graston.  Some of the specific benefits are:

  • Releases fascial restrictions and adhesions (scar tissue)
  • Increases skin temperature to facilitate healing
  • Improves muscle memory by facilitating reflex changes in chronic muscle holding patterns
  • Alters spinal reflex activity to decrease trigger point activity and neurologic facilitation
  • Increases local blood flow
  • Repairs degenerated or damaged connective tissue through increased fibroblast activity
  • Allows for more sensitivity in detecting and treating fascial restrictions with instruments versus practitioner's hands
  • Decreases treatment time

How many treatments are necessary?

Each patient is unique.  However, a plan of care typically consists of two visits per week for four to six weeks. Some patients will achieve their treatment goals in as little as one or two treatments. However, on occasion severe chronic conditions my exceed six weeks. After your initial evaluation and treatment we will be better able to tell you what to expect.

What conditions can be treated?

Graston Technique has been highly successful at treating:

  • Tendonopathies such as Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow, Achilles Tendonitis, Patellar Tendonitis, etc.
  • Fascial syndromes such as Plantar Fasciitis, IT Band Syndrome, Compartment Syndromes (Shin Splints), Trigger Finger, etc.
  • Myofascial pain syndromes such as Tension Headaches, Spasms, Fibromyalgia etc.
  • Nerve entrapments such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Acute and Chronic Muscle Strains and Ligament Sprains
  • Post-Surgical and Traumatic Scarring
  • Edema Reduction

What else will my treatment include?

As with any injury rehabilitation, strengthening and stretching are an important part of your treatment to strengthen damaged muscles and tissue, and to help remodel the adhesions. The types of exercises will be specific to your abilities and condition. In addition, restrictive or functional taping measures may be employed when necessary to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
