left_doctors_image.jpgDr. Lee Popwell Bio (Pictured on Left):

Dr. Popwell graduated from National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Illinois in 1979. After a short internship in Chicago, Illinois and Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Popwell returned to his home town of Jacksonville, Florida and began practicing in Jacksonville Beach in 1980.

He practiced for nearly 20 years with Dr. Gil Brown, who had practiced in Jacksonville Beach since the early 1950s. Dr. Popwell greatly appreciated the wisdom gained from the years of mentoring with Dr. Brown, who had practiced with his father.

Popwell2010_017_1__1.jpgDr. Popwell met Elizabeth in Florida, and they were married in 1987. Since that time the Lord blessed them with three children: Brooks (’88), Lisa (’89), and Ben (’95). The Popwells homeschooled their three children while living in Jacksonville Beach. Seeing the need for Christian schooling to complete their education, they decided to move to Greenville to accomplish this goal through the Bob Jones school system. This move was made in 2003, at which time the Popwell Spine Center was established in Taylors, South Carolina, a suburb of Greenville.

Throughout his career, Dr. Popwell has served the chiropractic needs of many professional golfers. Being a golfer himself, his shared passion for the game, as well as his chiropractic profession, has allowed Dr. Popwell to assist many golfers, both amateur and professional. One of his most unusual venues of treating has been through the locker rooms of both the Players Championship and the Masters, where Dr. Popwell had unique access to the players right on their own turf during those professional events.

The Spine Center was based around a chiropractic family practice that was consistent with Dr. Popwell’s conservative healthcare beliefs. As God blessed the practice, the need for another doctor became apparent. It was at this time, through the Christian Chiropractic Association’s website, that Dr. Popwell met Dr. Joe Scota from Philadelphia. Not coincidentally, Dr. Scota had once lived in this area and his father was and still is a resident in Taylors, where he owns and operates the Scota Karate Academy.

Dr. Popwell & Dr. Scota established the Popwell•Scota partnership in 2004. Their desire is to work together to provide “Golden Rule” care for their patients centered around hands-on healthcare in a family-practice setting.

Dr. Joe Scota Bio (Pictured Above on Right):

Dr. Joe Scota was born and spent his early years in Philadelphia PA. His father’s job moved them to the Greenville area during Dr. Scota's high school years, and he graduated from Riverside High School in Greer. Initially resisting the move, Dr. Scota has come to know and love the south as home.

After his undergraduate studies, Dr. Scota graduated from Sherman Chiropractic College in 2001, and moved back to the northeast for the early part of his career. After practicing in New York and Pennsylvania, it was the Lord's will that Dr. Scota move to the south once again.  While visiting his father in the spring of 2004, it was Dr. Scota's wife, Sybil, whom the Lord used as an instrument for change.  At her prompting, and while visiting, Dr. Scota initially met Dr. Popwell through the Christian Chiropractic Association's website.  Dr. Popwell was looking for a partner to share the treatment load, and Dr. Scota was looking to establish ownership in a practice.  After much prayer and consideration, both doctors recognized the Lord's hand in their meeting.  Since that time, Dr. Popwell and Dr. Scota have enjoyed the blessing of practicing in partnership at the Popwell Scota Spine Center.

Dr. Scota is also an avid Martial Artist of 23+ years, having earned the rank of 3rd degree black belt.  Dr. Scota is also a head instructor in his family’s karate school, Scota Karate Academy, in Taylors, SC.  His knowledge of physical fitness couples nicely with guiding patients in stretches and excercises to help rehabilitate their conditions.  Dr. Scota also teaches a monthly core strengthening class at the karate school for established patients.

Dr. Scota is a member of Heritage Bible Church and currently resides in Taylors, SC with his wife, Sybil, and five children, Amber, Lucas, Caleb, Joshua, and Jocelyn.

Dr. Dan Becker is a graduate of Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC. Prior to attending chiropractic college, Dr. Becker completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Exercise Science at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA.

Since graduating from Sherman College, Dr. Becker has earned three sports-related post graduate certifications.  He is a certified chiropractic sports physician (CCSP) through the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. This program was developed to train chiropractors in the areas of on-field and in office diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries, as well as performance enhancement. He is also a certified provider of the Graston Technique and a certified provider in full body Active Release Techniques.  Both Graston and Active Release are very specialized soft-tissue techniques aimed at reversing chronic muscle pain by breaking fibrous myofascial adhesions in connective tissue. These techniques, coupled with appropriate chiropractic care and rehabilitation, have great results in alleviating chronic and acute musculoskeletal pain and increasing functional improvement.  The Graston Technique is utilized by over 40 professional sports teams, 100 collegiate teams and at 4 Olympic performance centers.  Active Release Techniques is also widely used by professional and amateur sports teams and is the treatment of choice for Ironman Triathalons.

Prior to joining The Popwell Scota Spine Center, Dr. Becker practiced in a sports medicine clinic in the suburbs of Washington D.C., and has spent the last five years in private practice in Tryon, NC.  Dr. Becker is excited about practicing in Greenville with Dr. Popwell and Dr. Scota because it allows him to focus on soft-tissue care while giving him the peace of mind knowing patients are receiving top notch chiropractic care as well.
